RSS Explained

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and represents a set of data formats for sharing information. RSS permits sites such as Newtyne to share, provide and syndicate the content of their site in a simplified form. RSS allows you to keep up to date on changes in the content of a particular site, or group of sites without having to visit them all, by aggregating the RSS feeds into a single access point.

Using RSS Feeds

To use RSS feeds from the Newtyne, or any other site, you need to select your access method: this may be a browser such as Firefox, Opera or Safari (or Internet Explorer 7), a piece of software called an aggregator, or a web-based aggregator. (See below for a list of resources.)

Adding an RSS feed to Firefox Live Bookmarks

To use RSS with Firefox, look for the RSS icon in the right of the address bar (or bottom right, if you are using an earlier version), then click on the link which pops up to add the link to your Live Bookmarks. When the dialogue opens, select a location to store the RSS feed. Updates to the RSS feed will be automatically reflected in your bookmarks. Clicking on a bookmark will open the relevant entry in the site.

Subscribing to an RSS feed using an aggregator

An aggregator, or news reader is either an application which you install on your main computer, or web-based, which allows you to check your RSS feeds from any internet-enabled computer. Once you have chosen and installed/ subscribed to your aggregator you can add RSS feeds in several ways. Visit the site whose feed you wish to select and look for the orange RSS icon, drag the icon to your aggregator, click on the icon, then drag the url to your aggregator, or cut and paste the url.
